Looking for something fun to do over the Thanksgiving holiday? Here are a few things happening this week in and around Fort Lauderdale to kick off the "holiday season". Enjoy!

The touring production of “The Book of Mormon”, the critically-acclaimed musical from South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, begins its 3-week run at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Avenue) on November 26. The New York Times calls it "the best musical of this century”, while Entertainment Weekly says it's "the funniest musical of all time." Jon Stewart of The Daily Show calls it "a crowning achievement. So good it makes me angry." The winner of nine Tony Awards - including Best Musical - “The Book of Mormon” will take center stage at the Broward Center through December 22 and tickets start at $45.

Get some exercise in before your big holiday meal! The 3rd annual Fort Lauderdale 5K Turkey Trot & Turkey Paddle takes place on Thanksgiving morning (November 28) and offers participants the chance to run one of most scenic routes in America as it takes you down beautiful State Road A1A along Fort Lauderdale’s famous white sand beach. This USA Track & Field sanctioned race is great for everyone, from beginners to elite runners and even paddleboarders, too. (The 2 mile Stand-Up Paddleboard course will start at the same mileage marker as the 5K Run/Walk, head north for 1 mile and then turn around to finish back at the starting point.) Thanksgiving-themed costumes are welcomed and encouraged! Race registration begins at 6 am, with the starting gun going off at 7:30. Your $35 registration fee benefits the iTrace Foundation and its mission to fight childhood obesity.

On November 29, the BB&T Center (One Panther Parkway, Sunrise) will host the arena-rock juggernaut that is The Trans Siberian Orchestra, perfectly coinciding with the start of the holiday season. With a musical style incorporating classical, orchestral, and progressive elements into hard rock and heavy metal, the Trans Siberian Orchestra is widely known for their elaborate concerts that feature a string section, a light show, lasers, moving trusses, video screens, and special effects synchronized to music. Consistently one of the top ten ticket-selling bands to tour the world, it is TSO’s holiday rock opera that is always most anticipated. Set to debut a new stage with new surprises this year, you don't want to miss this rocking holiday tradition! Two shows at 4 pm & 8 pm feature tickets starting at $46.

The legendary Bonnie Raitt will be performing at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) on November 30 at 8pm. The famous singer/songwriter’s first few albums of the early 1970’s largely comprised traditional blues material and introduced her unique voice, feminist stance, and abilities as a slide guitarist. But it was her 1989 release, “Nick of Time”, that reached the top of the charts - earning her 3 Grammys along the way - and sent her career soaring. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2012, she released her 16th studio album, “Slipstream”, which went on to win various awards, including the 2013 Grammy Award for best Americana album. Her current tour showcases the new album along with many of her greatest hits and tickets for the evening’s show start at $59.
