There is a lot to do in Fort Lauderdale this week, as we say farewell to 2013 and usher in a brand new year!   A blank slate full of promise, 2014 is sure to bring many exciting things to this great city.  Here are a few of our choices to start things off right...

On December 31, ring in the New Year in Downtown Fort Lauderdale at the official “Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown”.  One of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in Florida, this free 11-hour street festival features a display of 10,000 lights, and a variety of activities for the whole family including bounce houses, face painting and games, contests and line dancing.  Starting at 4:30 pm, the festivities will take place on SW 2nd Street in Himmarshee Village, between SW 2nd and SW 5th Avenues.

This season bring the family together to witness the #1 holiday spectacular, George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”, as performed by the acclaimed Miami City Ballet, January 3-5 at the Broward Center for the Arts.  Join Marie and her Nutcracker Prince as they travel through a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes, sugar plum fairies, and an epic battle between heroic toy soldiers and mischievous mice! This lavish performance - one of the ONLY productions of George Balanchine's Nutcracker in the nation - features magnificent scenery, elaborate costumes, and the magical music of Tchaikovsky. This is the perfect holiday treat for the entire family.  Don't miss your chance to experience the holiday event of the season - Get your tickets now, starting at just $25!

Enjoy the comic styling of George Lopez, as he makes an appearance at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) on January 4.   With a deeply rooted Hispanic heritage, the actor, comedian, and talk-show host is known for his frank, yet hilarious commentary on a wide range of topics mostly plucked from his personal life.  See his show at 8:00 pm, with tickets starting at $50.

Art lovers will rejoice on January 4-5 from 10:00am – 5:00pm when the Las Olas Art Fair returns to Fort Lauderdale, bringing with it two full days of art, live music, food and drink.  Now considered a South Florida tradition in its 26th year on Las Olas Boulevard, the Las Olas Art Fair is nationally recognized as one of the top events in America. Over the years, this renowned festival has become a premiere & must see event in South Florida.  See more than 150 artists display their work in what looks like an art gallery lining the iconic boulevard. Meet the creators of the art on display; commission a specific piece; ask questions about techniques; learn the sources of their inspirations; and purchase fine works of art at affordable prices.

Fort Lauderdale’s Coral Ridge is a lovely community of homes located between Sunrise and Oakland Park Boulevards, east of Federal Highway and west of the Intracoastal Waterway.  It was incorporated in 1947, during the real estate boom that followed WWII through the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Today the neighborhood is sometimes referred to as “Old Coral Ridge” in order to differentiate from the neighborhood of Coral Ridge Country Club which was established to the north later on in the 1960’s.  Coral Ridge is home to one of the most desirable public elementary schools in Broward County, the A-rated Bayview Elementary.  It is because of this school that the neighborhood is often one of the most sought-after by families with young children.

Coral Ridge (like Coral Ridge Country Club to the north) is bisected by Bayview Drive which stretches from Sunrise Blvd north to NE 62nd Street.  The west side of the neighborhood is bordered by the Middle River, which offers beautiful waterfront lots with small fixed bridges.  The portion of Coral Ridge east of Bayview, however, is made up of a number of finger-like peninsulas and wide canals, offering easily navigable ocean access with no fixed bridges.  Its ideal waterfront location, along with the Coral Ridge Yacht Club located just seconds from the Intracoastal; make this neighborhood very popular among boaters.

In addition to the Yacht Club, the area also features a convenient neighborhood boat launch at George English Park, one of Fort Lauderdale’s many fine public parks that is also home to basketball and tennis courts, a playground and picnic areas.  Old Coral Ridge is just minutes to fine dining and shopping at the upscale Galleria Mall, and Fort Lauderdale Beach is just across the causeway.  The Coral Ridge Country Club, with its picturesque golf course designed in 1955 by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a 5-minute drive to the north.

With its great location, excellent amenities, and ocean access, this established Fort Lauderdale neighborhood is one of the most sought after to call home.  If you would like to know more about the homes of Coral Ridge, or any other fine community in Fort Lauderdale, call Gayle Borden, Fort Lauderdale’s Leading Real Estate expert, at 954.525.3355.

The winter holiday season is in full swing!  With near-perfect weather and so many fun things to do, Fort Lauderdale is surely the place to be!  Check out what’s happening this week…

On December 21 & 22, you can enjoy the nostalgic charm of the holidays with the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida's production of the classic ballet “The Nutcracker” at The Parker Playhouse (707 NE 8th Street). Performed to Tchaikovsky's memorable score, and based on the popular story by Ernest Hoffman, The Nutcracker is the ideal introduction to the magnificent world of ballet and perfect holiday entertainment year after year. Tickets start at $15 and the show begins at 7:00 pm on Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday.

See the iHeartRadio & Y100 Jingle Ball 2013 Tour on December 20 at the BB&T Center (One Panther Parkway).  The season's biggest annual music event captures the holiday spirit of the “iHeartRadio” app as it makes nearly a dozen stops from Los Angeles to Boston before ending its run right here in South Florida.  Noted performers include Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Enrique Iglesias, Fall Out Boy, Flo Rida, Avril Lavigne, and Jason Derulo. The show begins at 7:30 and tickets start at $60.

College basketball fans should be looking forward to the 20th Annual MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic tipping off on December 21 at the BB&T Center (One Panther Parkway, Sunrise).  Florida State University and the University of Florida return for the 2013 tourney sponsored by, and leading up, to the famous college football Orange Bowl to be played on January 3.  This afternoon of great college basketball will feature the Florida Gators taking on the Fresno State Bulldogs at 2:00 pm and then the Florida State Seminoles will the U. Mass Minutemen immediately following at 4:30 pm.  Tickets start at just $25 for you to go out and cheer on your home state teams!

On December 21, join sponsors Broward House, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Rosie's Bar & Grill, Bill's, and Alibi, as they present a day full of holiday fun at “Santa’s 5K Fun Run/Walk & Sleigh Race”. Beginning at 8am at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors (2262 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors), you can participate in a costumed 5K Fun Run/Walk taking you around the city of Wilton Manors while dressed as your favorite holiday character (think Santa, Mrs. Clause, Rudolph, Frosty, an elf, a dreidle, or anything that resonates the holiday season for you!).  Following the run/walk, enjoy a festive cocktail while dancing to the sounds of a DJ and stage performers before the start of the 2nd Annual Santa’s Sleigh Bed Race.  Each entry will feature a holiday-themed bed on wheels and have a crew of 5 piloting and outfitted to match. Beds will race down the street against each other until a winner is crowned the "Wilton Manors Bed Heads" and get to take home the coveted "Bed Head" trophy!  All day admission/participation in the festivities is $25.
