What great and exciting things are happening this week in Fort Lauderdale? Here are just a few fun ideas to keep you busy over this holiday week (the last of 2013!):

Catch a performance of “9 to 5: The Musical” at The Broward Stage Door Theater (8036 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs). This musical comedy is based on the 1980 hit movie of the same name and features Dolly Parton's original hit title song, along with her new Tony- and Grammy-nominated score. Three women - an overworked office manager, a jilted wife, and an objectified secretary - conspire to depose their smarmy boss and begin making woman-friendly changes in the workplace, all with hilarious results. The Broward Stage Door Theater is one of the longest running not-for-profit theaters in South Florida. A proud cultural hub for the performing arts in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area for over 20 years, the theater is dedicated to offering Broadway-caliber productions that aim to entertain and inspire. See this fun show just about any night of the week, now through January 19. Tickets start at $38.

Also through January 19, watch “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”: An Imax 3D Experience at the Autonation Imax at Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery & Science (401 SW 2 Street). The second in a trilogy of films adapting J.R.R. Tolkein’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, this installment continues the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian Mckellen) and thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on an epic quest to reclaim the lost dwarf kingdom of Erebor. Admission: $14 for adults; $11 for children (2-12) and show times vary throughout the run.

On December 28, attend a rocking performance by the legendary American blues-rock band ZZ Top at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood). The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees are sure to revisit all of the hits spanning their four decades as recording artists. With 25 million albums sold (and 13 certified multi-platinum records), ZZ Top ranks 80th in total US album sales. Don’t miss their live performance of such classics as “Gimme All Your Lovin’”, “Cheap Sunglasses”, and “Sharp Dressed Man” in a great, intimate venue with seating for just 5500. The show starts at 8:00 pm.

See the “Comedy All Stars- Dom Irrera, Jake Johannsen & Tammy Pescatelli” perform at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel Ballroom on December 29th. Nominated six times for an American Comedy Award, Dom Irrera’s stand-up material was honed in a multi-generational Italian household in South Philadelphia before taking it to the stage in the early 1980’s. Jake Johannsen’s bizarre take on life and his uniquely intelligent comedy style have made him a regular at comedy clubs all over the country since his performing debut in 1982. Comedienne Tammy Pescatelli has been called “the kind of woman you wish was your sister or your best friend – she‘s always ready with a good joke or a lively quip.” She learned her “funny skills” growing up in a large, crazy, Italian family outside of Cleveland and then went on to marry into an even larger, crazier, Italian family; making for an intensely entertaining act. Together, expect these three exceptional comics to “ignite the night with raucous laughter”! The show begins at 8:00 pm and tickets start at $37.
