Looking for something fun to do this weekend?  While you can always hit the beach to enjoy the wonderful Fort Lauderdale sun and sand, here are a few other choices, as well!

The country's premier figure skating production, "Stars on Ice", is proud to announce that this year's US figure skating champions, and top Olympic medal contenders at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi will headline this year's nationwide tour. Bringing the spirit and passion of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating team back to home ice, this year's highly anticipated "Stars on Ice" production arrives at the BB&T Center (1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise) on April 5 at 7:30.  Tickets are $25.  If you love figure skating, this show is not ot be missed!

On April 5, St. Clement Church in Wilton Manors (225 NW 29 Avenue) will be hosting a “Spring Festival Eggstravaganza”, where thousands of Easter eggs filled with goodies will be scattered across the fields, ready to end up in the hands of hundreds of children. This free event, from 10:00am to 6:00pm, is for all kids newborn to 5th grade, and includes bounce houses, a concession stand, arts and crafts, live entertainment, face painting and pony rides.  Have your cameras ready, Peter Cottontail will hop on over and be available for pictures!

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) invites the South Florida community to participate on April 5 in the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. The “Take Steps” walk is one of 150 such events that are taking place nationwide to support the more than 1.4 million Americans (among them 94,000 Floridians) that are affected by Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Supporters are encouraged to create a team and help change the lives of the thousands of people affected locally. In addition to the Walk festivities, there will be free food, drinks, musical entertainment and kid’s zone featuring bounce houses and fun for the entire family. Registration is at 9am, followed by the 10:30am start for the Walk which will begin at Huizenga Plaza (1 East Las Olas Blvd) in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  Any registered walker who raises a minimum of $500 will be entered to win a $1,000 Target shopping spree.

Also on April 5, The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale will be hosting it's 3rd Annual New River Raft Race at Esplanade Park from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The race will start and finish on the river in front of this beautiful park adjacent to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. This year's theme is “Pirates of the River”, so rafts and crews will be decked out for the festivities in their finest pirate garb.  Rafts are judged on a number of criteria including best finish, best design, most spirited and most pirate-like crew, among others. The fleet will paddle and splash on the river to compete for prizes awarded at the party in the park immediately following the race.  Participants and spectators alike can enjoy food & drink, musical entertainment, crafts, and a kid’s area with bounce house and face painting.  Racers can build their own rafts or purchase them pre-built from the sponsors at The Rotary Club.  All Proceeds benefit Rotary’s 1090 Foundation that provides college scholarships for local students, international humanitarian aid and infrastructure projects.

Coral Heights is a small area of Fort Lauderdale north of Oakland Park Blvd, between Federal Highway to the east and Dixie Highway on the west.  Though technically within the boundaries of the city of Oakland Park, many simply consider Coral Heights to be another great “East Fort Lauderdale” neighborhood; located within close proximity to great schools, shopping and dining, and only ten minutes to beautiful Fort Lauderdale beach.

Homes throughout Coral Heights can be found along the shores of 2 large lakes offering beautiful wide water vistas, several canals with fixed bridges, or on dry lots along quiet residential streets.  Neighborhood demographics are typical of most East Fort Lauderdale locales, with a wide variety of young families, adult couples, singles and empty nesters, along with some second homeowners.  The typical home in Coral Heights is often ranch-style, 2-3 bedrooms with about 1300 to 2000 square feet, with 1-2 car garage or carport attached, and very often a pool in the backyard.  It is not uncommon to drive through the neighborhood and see newer roofs and windows, fantastic landscaping, and an obvious sense of pride in ownership. Located in the heart of Coral Heights are the Villas of Coral Heights Townhomes. With less than seventy 3-story townhomes situated on just over 4 lush acres, the Villas are a popular location, boasting amenities and features often reserved for high end luxury condos, with a much more affordable price tag.

One great advantage of living in Coral Heights is its enviable location, close to many conveniences and amenities.  Bordering the neighborhood on the east is Federal Highway (US1) with its many retail stores and restaurants.  Less than 10 minutes to the east is the beautiful Coral Ridge Country Club with its classically-designed Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course.  Just a little further beyond and across the Intracoastal is world-famous Fort Lauderdale Beach.  To the southeast, you can find Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, and the Galleria Mall with its upscale shopping and dining, and bustling Pompano Beach is just to the north.

Coral Heights truly embodies everything great about Fort Lauderdale living, with its suburban feel right in the middle of the city, and easy access to many conveniences.  For more information on this and other fine Fort Lauderdale communities, contact Leading Fort Lauderdale Real Estate expert Gayle Borden at 954.525.3355.

Starting March 25, catch a performance of “American Idiot” as it begins it’s 2-week run at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Avenue).  This new musical, set to an electrifying score by Green Day, centers on three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny flee a stifling suburban lifestyle and parental restrictions, while Will stays home to work out his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend. The former pair look for meaning in life and try out the freedom and excitement of the city. Tunny quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military, and is shipped off to war. Johnny finds a part of himself that he grows to dislike, has a relationship and experiences lost love. The resulting turmoil creates a high-octane show, which showcases every song from Green Day's 2004 Grammy-winning album American Idiot, as well as several songs from their follow-up award-winning release, 21st Century Breakdown.  Showtimes vary, and ticket prices range from $34.50-$74.50.

Mark your calendars to see the World’s Finest in thoroughbred horse racing on March 29, during the running of the 62nd Florida Derby taking place at Gulfstream Park (901 S. Federal Hwy, Hallandale Beach).  Expect giveaways, entertainment and top-notch horse racing all day long.  This Grade 1 stakes race is run at 1? miles on the dirt for a $1 Million purse, plus winners of the Florida Derby typically go on to run in the Kentucky Derby – the first jewel of the famed Triple Crown.  Entry to Gulfstream is always free and the post time for the day’s first race is 1:05.

March 29 & 30, the South Florida Ukulele Fest 2014 will bring some of the best ukulele performers in North America for a weekend of concerts, skills workshops, food trucks, and all-around family fun to downtown Fort Lauderdale. Ukulele enthusiasts can enjoy exclusive events with a “weekend pass” ticket, but the general public is invited to share the ukulele love with FREE music throughout the event. A 7:00pm concert on Saturday will feature famous ukulele performers including The Barnkickers, Sarah Maisel & Craig Chee, Manitoba Hal, and Pacific Rhythms, and will culminate in a spectacular performance of Hawaiian music, featuring hula and fire dancers.  On Sunday from 10:00am to 2:00pm, weekend pass holders can enjoy more music and great food at the Ukulele Luau Sunday Brunch in Esplanade Park where everyone is invited to bring their own ukulele for a jam in the park. A limited number of All-Access Weekend Passes are available for purchase online for $89. Pass holders will receive access to the Friday night event, VIP concert seating, skills workshops on Saturday, and the Ukulele Luau Sunday Brunch.

Just a bit to the north of Fort Lauderdale is Hillsboro Beach, a small beachfront hamlet named for the Earl of Hillsborough, who served as Secretary of State for the American Colonies from 1768 to 1772.  In return for his service, the Earl of Hillsborough was rewarded by the King of England with a large grant of land in Florida (since the area was an English possession at that time).  He was given ownership of a parcel of land in South Florida along the east coast, which included an inlet from the open water to the interior. Part of this land is now known by the shortened name of Hillsboro and includes the adjacent Hillsboro Inlet.  It is located on a small peninsula just north of Pompano Beach, extending just over 3 miles up to Deerfield Beach, with Lighthouse Point to its west (across the Intracoastal) and the Atlantic Ocean on the east.  Officially settled in 1922 and then incorporated as a town in 1939, today the population of Hillsboro Beach (according to the 2010 census) is a mere 1,875.

Hillsboro Beach real estate enjoys a virtually unspoiled landscape of pristine beaches and lush tropical landscaping.  Considered one the most elite addresses along the Gold Coast, the 3.2 miles along State Road A1A includes an exclusive stretch known as “Hillsboro Mile” (often referred to as “Millionaire’s Mile”), where secluded waterfront lots feature some of the most luxurious and stately homes in the area.  This idyllic waterfront community is home to these gorgeous homes and luxury condominiums, many offering both prestigious oceanfront locations and prime Intracoastal dockage.  Though awash with the feel of an island-like haven, Hillsboro Beach is still just minutes from world-class dining and shopping, with quality golfing nearby, and ample opportunities for water sports, as well.

One of the most popular and historic landmarks in town is the majestic Hillsboro Lighthouse. The light marks the northern limit of the Florida Reef, an underwater coral formation along the southeast coast of the state.  In 1901, the United States Lighthouse Establishment persuaded Congress to authorize the construction of a light in the dark area between the Jupiter Inlet Light (approximately 50 miles to the north), and Fowey Rocks Light, located 7 miles south of Cape Florida on Key Biscayne.  The octagonal iron tower was built by Russel Wheel & Foundry Co in Detroit, Michigan, moved to the Hillsboro Inlet Light Station in 1906, and officially lit on March 7, 1907.  It was automated in 1974, and the light acts as both a coastal navigational aide and a support to local water traffic.  Hillsboro Inlet Light is now considered one of the most powerful lights in the world, with a beam that can be seen for 28 nautical miles (32 mi).  In 2003, the US Postal Service honored the Hillsboro Inlet Light with its own 37¢ postage stamp.

In the second half of the 20th century, the Hillsboro Inlet became an increasingly busier waterway due to a rise in South Florida’s population and word spreading of its wonderful recreational and commercial boating opportunities.  The Inlet serves as one of the main points of entry between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.  Proximity to the inlet makes waterfront real estate in this area highly coveted.
