FORT LAUDERDALE --The Florida Department of Transportation is holding an informal open house event to discuss the reconstruction of A1A from just south of Sunrise Boulevard to NE 18 Street in Fort Lauderdale. The event will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2014, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Galleria Mall – Upper Level, 2414 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale FL 33304.

Project plans, typical sections and renderings of the completed project will be on display. Project staff will be on hand throughout this event to discuss the construction and answer questions one-on-one.

Construction work began July 28 and is expected to be completed late 2015. The project includes:

  • Constructing a wide beachfront promenade on the east side of A1A consisting of a paver sidewalk
  • Installing a decorative sea wall with accent lighting
  • Constructing a raised median in front of Birch State Park
  • Constructing median islands and left turn lanes in the residential section
  • Installing a new underground drainage system
  • Relocating underground utilities
  • Restoring beach showers
  • Installing decorative turtle-friendly pedestrian lighting on both sides of A1A
  • Installing signalized pedestrian crosswalks at Birch State Park, NE 15th Court and NE 17th Street
