Stephen Ross, best known to many Floridians as the owner of the Miami Dolphins and SunLife Stadium, has just added another property to his already impressive portfolio.  Ross’ New York-based Related Cos. Related Fund Management has spent a reported $90 million to buy the W Hotel & Residences on Fort Lauderdale Beach.  Open since 2009 and located across A1A from the sand at 401 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., it is a 23-story, 2-tower Hotel and Residence, comprised of 346 rooms and 171 condo units. The group plans on maintaining the property as a W, a luxury brand recognized worldwide for their high-end hotels with outstanding service and amenities.

It was the condo units collectively that were on the market for $90 million, but Joanna Rose, spokeswoman for Related Fund Management, says the group also purchased the hotel units for an undisclosed amount. "The W Fort Lauderdale is a well-amenitized oceanfront property in a premier market, and we see great potential to add value through a well-executed upgrade and repositioning plan," Rose said via the Sun Sentinel.

We’re looking forward to seeing what additional benefits and amenities the W Hotel & Residences will bring to visitors and residents of Fort Lauderdale Beach, now that the new ownership is on board.

Don’t let the summer heat slow you down, there’s so much going on this week in Fort Lauderdale!  Here are a few of our recommendations…

On July 22, catch The Fray performing at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) with special guests Barcelona and Oh Honey.  Formed in the 2002 in Denver, CO, The Fray achieved success with the release of their 2005 platinum-selling debut album “How to Save a Life” and have been selling out shows across the country ever since. The show begins at 7:30pm and tickets are available for $34-$59.

On July 25, join sponsors Marine Hospitality, Riverfront Cruises, and Anticipation Luxury Yacht Charters aboard the Liberty Belle for a summer evening cruise along the Intracoastal.  Boarding at 6:00pm, enjoy a sunset cruise from 6:30-8:30pm.  $40 Admission includes open bar, food, and music, and all proceeds will benefit Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club, Rebuilding Together Broward County, Covenant House Florida, Children's Diagnostic & Treatment Center, and Historic Stranahan House Museum. For more information contact Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale.

Also on July 25, Sara Bareilles performs at the Hard Rock Live with Emily king and Hannah Georgas.  The singer-songwriter rose to fame with her 2007 single “Love Song” and has since sold over 1 million records, 4 million singles in the US alone, and has been nominated for 5 Grammy awards.  She also signed as a judge for the 3rd season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off”, an a cappella singing competition, alongside musicians Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman. In February 2012, VH1 named Bareilles #80 in their list of the Top 100 Greatest Women in Music.  Don’t miss the amazing show at 7:30pm with special guests Emily King and Hannah Georgas.  Tickets are available starting at $48.

If you enjoy photography – or diving shipwrecks, for that matter - you cannot miss the haunting, captivating, and intriguing images captured and created by photographer Andreas Franke, on exhibit at Frame ‘n Art By the Sea (229A Commercial Blvd, Lauderdale-By-the-Sea) beginning July 25.  Franke’s photographs bring “new life” to the undersea world of shipwrecks.  His “Sinking World” images have created an exciting international partnership that brings the art world underwater to join the adventurous realm of SCUBA diving, and have inspired people the world over.  The July 25th opening reception begins at 5:30 and the store will host the exhibit through September 21.

If you’ve heard of Schlitterbahn Waterparks, then you’re no stranger to the “gallons of fun” (pun intended!) they provide to millions of people each year at their 5 locations throughout Texas and Kansas.  (Perhaps you've seen them on many a Travel Channel special?!)  Family-owned and operated since 1966, Schlitterbahn Waterparks - German for "Slippery Road" - continue to set the benchmark for family entertainment of the H2O kind.  Sometime in the near future, residents and visitors to Broward County, FL will get to join in on the fun, as well, as the city of Fort Lauderdale has recently approved the construction of the newest Schlitterbahn Park and Resort.

The company hopes to attract South Florida tourists to the one-time spring training site of the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.  The recently approved plan covers about 64 acres just a half-mile west of Interstate 95 between Commercial Boulevard and Cypress Creek Road, including the site of the old Fort Lauderdale Stadium and Lockhart Stadium, the current home of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers professional soccer team.

More than double the size of its nearest competitor, Rapids Water Park in Riviera Beach, the proposed water park features a state-of-the-art interconnected system of rivers and rides that visitors can enjoy without ever getting out of their inner tubes.  It's family-friendly, with plenty of attractions for younger children, no parking fees and no rental charges for inner tubes, life jackets or the use of picnic tables. Visitors can pack a cooler and bring their own lunch into the park.  The park's river system, which Schlitterbahn has dubbed “Transportainment”, blasts riders on conveyor belts through "uphill watercoasters," allows them to float through lazy sections and rapids, and offers detours through thrilling chute rides.

The plans call for even more than water adventures at the park. They include "Treehaus" luxury suites that will rise around the perimeter of the park.  From the outside, the lodgings look like a treehouse constructed by kids, but inside feature deluxe accommodations and luxury finishes. A three-bedroom suite with pull-out couch in the living room could accommodate as many as 12 people and run $1,000 a night during peak season, according to the company’s spokesperson. Though the park likely won’t open until Summer 2017, they are estimating the cost of a one-day, full-price adult admission to the park at about $50.

The $50 million first phase is construction of the water park at the northern end of the property. Portions of Fort Lauderdale Stadium will be left standing to form a castle-like entrance to the water park. It will have restrooms, dining areas and shops. The initial phase will also include four soccer fields at the southern end of the property for use by local schools and athletic organizations.  A second phase includes the redevelopment of Lockhart Stadium and expansion of the water park around it. No timetable has been set for that work, which could cost another $60 million.

Company officials say their schedule will be similar to that at Rapids — a 170-day season that encompasses the summer, fringe weekends and Spring Break. Although the park is in South Florida, its owners expect the main “season” to be the same as their locations elsewhere — Memorial Day to Labor Day, when it's the hottest and kids are out of school.

The company expects to employ up to 1,000 seasonal employees during the peak summer season with an additional 75 full-time employees, hoping to aid two of the hardest-hit sectors of the workforce: seniors and students, all the while offering South Florida another great family entertainment destination.  We’re looking forward to this great addition to Fort Lauderdale!

What fun things are happening around town this week?  If you like comedy, musical theater, classical music, or you're a history buff, here are just a few suggestions you might want to check out…

Actors, comedians, and fellow SNL-alumni, Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey are set to co-headline a night of comedy at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) on July 13 at 7pm. Tickets start at $54.

On July 14, The South Florida Symphony Presents “A Distance Shore” at The Josephine S. Leiser Opera Center (221 SW 3rd Avenue).  Enjoy the last concert of the season with the Blue Door String Quartet performing works by Hugo Wolf, Amy Beach, and Brahms. Captivating and highly original for its time, Hugo Wolf’s one movement Italian Serenade inspired great enthusiasm when it was first performed. Following in his footsteps, Amy Beach composed the String Quartet in One Movement. Fascinated by folk music, she successfully integrated three Inuit tunes into this form. The evening concludes with Brahms’ masterpiece String Quartet No. 1 in C minor.  The Blue Door String Quartet formed in 2012 and its members include Whitney La Grange (violin), Funda Cizmecloglu (violin), Yuiko Kamakari (violist), and Arthur Cook (cellist).  The show begins at 7pm and admission is $30.

Don't miss a delightfully amusing musical adaptation of Rapunzel July 17-19 at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5th Avenue), performed by the talented Young Professionals Touring Group. This witty and enchanting musical has it all: a possessive mother who happens to be a witch, a tentative young man who happens to be a prince and a strong-willed but naïve young girl with the longest hair in the world. With book and lyrics by two creators of the hit television show Friends, rest assured this fairy tale isn't going to be business as usual! It sheds new light on the beloved fairy tale, revealing a telling tale about parents and children, and the pangs and pleasures of growing up.  Admission is $10 and show times vary.

This weekend, July 19 & 20 from 12-4pm, explore “The Great South Florida History Mystery” at the Museum of Discovery & Science (401 SW 2nd Street).  Journey Back in Time and uncover the mysteries behind South Florida’s rich cultural history, as presented by the staff of The Stranahan House. Discover how our great peninsula’s unique geography, indigenous cultures, and innovative settlers used science and technology to truly make the Sunshine State shine.  Ride the Time-Traveling Railroad for a chance to win special prizes like IMAX tickets, children’s books, and special tours at the Stranahan House! Stops include: Florida Prehistory: Discover the animals of Prehistoric Florida at 12pm, Native American Drum Circle at 1pm, Trading Post Game Show where you’ll learn about the importance of commerce in South Florida’s history at 2pm, Ghost Talk Myths of South F-LORE-ida at 3pm, and Narrated Video Screening of Stranahan House Documentary at 4pm.  Admission is $14 adults, $13 senior, $12 child (2-12).

Fans of classic 80’s pop music won’t want to miss The Go-Go’s Replay America Summer 2014 Tour when it makes a much-anticipated stop on July 6 at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood).  The show will feature special guests Patty Smyth of Scandal, Martha Davis and The Motels, Cutting Crew and Naked Eyes, making Replay America “The Ultimate 80’s Festival”! The show starts at 4pm with tickets available at $44-$64.

On July 12, the Hard Rock Live will feature headlining comedian/actor Chris Tucker.  Best known for his roles in the movie “Friday” and as Detective Carter in the “Rush Hour” film series, Chris Tucker is going back to his comedy roots (he was a regular on Def Comedy Jam in the 1990’s!) for this cross country tour.  The show starts at 8:00pm.

On July 11, Holiday Park (E. Sunrise Blvd & Federal Hwy) will host another evening of the Bank of America Starlight Musicals Concert Series.  From 7:00-10:00pm, this week’s show will feature “Turnstiles”, a tribute to Billy Joel.  For 36 years, these free outdoor concerts have provided a great way to enjoy the summer with family and friends.  Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and coolers, and to relax and enjoy the music under the stars.

Take a break this week from the sweltering summer heat and spend some time enjoying a stunning Imax film at the Museum of Discovery and Science (401 SW 2nd Street).  Filmed in the heart of the Coral Triangle, amid the pristine coral reefs of Raja Ampat, Indonesia, Journey to the South Pacific transports audiences to an underwater Eden where exotic marine life flourishes.  Sea turtles, whale sharks, manta rays and other unusual creatures thrive here in this special place, the most bio-diverse marine ecosystem in the world.

In this feel-good ocean adventure, audiences join a 12-year-old boy on a voyage through the islands as he dives with the world’s largest fish, witnesses sea turtles laying their eggs after a 6,500-mile journey across the Pacific, and encounters exotic critters like the coconut octopus. Here, Raja Ampat’s islanders use ancient wisdom and modern science to protect their local reefs, showing what it means to live in balance with the ocean.  Narrated by Academy Award® winner Cate Blanchett, it’s a tale of celebration and discovery, bringing to life the extraordinary undersea beauty and inspiring human stories from this unique part of the world, revealing that we are all islanders on this ocean planet we call home.  Showtimes vary, go to for more info.
